This post is a wiki. Anyone with karma >75 is welcome to improve it.

The characters were crisp on the Retina display with NeoOffice and OpenOffice. Then I set the main display to the external display (1920.1080). Of course, LO characters were blurry on the Retina display. But a difference appeared between OO and NO when windows were moved to the Retina display. So I made a bug report found here but running LibreOffice 7.0.3.1 in macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 on my MacBook Pro 13' results in the text being blurry when running through my Retina display (doesn't happen on TB display). Anyone else seeing this? I encourage whoever is experiencing this to add their device to the bug report and CC. Hopefully, we can get this resolved soon because it makes LO very.

I am using Libre Writer 3.5.6.2 with a Mac Book Pro Retina display. Text on the page starts OK and then selectively becomes blurry. Often it in on paragraph boundaries, but not always. If I scroll the text out of view and then back, the text is clear again. The line or lines where I am typing are sharp, but other lines not in my 'focus of operation' slowly become blurry.

This happens on no other programs. Where is the setting to turn this 'feature' off?

Thank you

I have had the same kind of problem for months on Mac OS X, from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, on a non-retina MacBook. I now know that the source of the problem is that LibreOffice and OpenOffice use the old text layout engine ATSUI instead of Core Text, but there is no real solution yet…

@CyanCG -- That's really bizarre. Why would the text become progressively worse using the old API? (sounds like some kind of redraw issue) Do you know if there's a bug filed against this problem?

I don't know if a bug has been filed and I am unfamiliar with the bug filing system. Guess I should check it out and learn how to use it, as I believe there are a number of Mac-specific issues that have not been adressed for some time and I don't know to what extent the developers are aware of them.

As for text layout getting worse over time, maybe OO/LibO in particular use it in a non-conventional way which would account for it. What I know is that there are many layout and rendering bugs (characters appearing strange, columns not showing until the cursor has been moved, badly-named fonts etc)

@CyanCG -- Thanks, it's great have someone familiar with OSX take a look at this bug. Is there a specific tag I can put on any mac-related q's so that the mac users on this site can zero-in on them quickly? I think it would great for us to be able to play to our strengths.

Bugzilla selection: fdo#36448 · fdo#44887 · fdo#56932 · maybe more onfdo#42082(Depends on:)

One of the comments on Bug 36448 states that it would be difficult to solve the issue by using the most recent text rendering API on OS X, because that would compromise OS X 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6 support. As for the OS X-specific tags to use for questions, I'd say mac, osx, macosx and macbook.

Could you please improve this text fuzziness? It's been years, after all. Other apps have solved this (NeoOffice). Please implement Core Text, or whatever it takes, to resolve this issue.

Just to clarify, this fuzziness affects non-retina Mac users as well as retina.

I didn't notice this was a problem until yesterday when I upgraded to the latest version of LibreOffice (4.3.5.2). The text, both on the page itself and in dialog boxes and such is very fuzzy compared to all the other applications running on my Mac. So if this has been fixed once it's broken again.

[edit]New Features

This version is a new version of NeoOffice that is based on LibreOffice. While previous versions of NeoOffice were based on the OpenOffice code, NeoOffice 2017 is based on the LibreOffice 4.4 code.

We switched to the LibreOffice 4.4 code because the LibreOffice code is able to open and save Microsoft Office .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx documents with fewer errors than the OpenOffice code.
